Australia’s Tom Slingsby is the Laser World Champion

The Belorussian Tatiana Drozdovskaya and the Australian Tom Slingsby have today been crowned world champions in the Laser Radial and Laser Standard classes respectively. The medal races, held in the afternoon, were thrilling to watch and showed the level of competitiveness of both fleets.

After a day with no races due to the strong wind that swept across the race areas, Cascais was once again the stage of a fantastic day of sailing. On the 8th day of the championships, two more champions have been determined.

In the men’s events, Australia’s Tom Slingsby confirmed his favourite status and overcame his direct opponents. At the end, he was able to celebrate his first world title. New Zealand’s Andrew Murdoch climbed into 2nd overall, securing silver, and Deniss Karpak, of Estonia, clinched 3rd. Gustavo Lima was 10th and qualified Portugal for Beijing.

The ISAF Sailing World Championships will today see the 8th day of racing.

Currently the wind blows between 20 – 30 knots.
At the moment all races will proceed as scheduled.

Attentions will turn to the Medal Races for Laser Standard and Laser Radial at 15:00 and 16:30.

The first ISAF Sailing World Champions – Cascais 2007 have been found. In the Star, Brazilians Robert Scheidt-Bruno Prada and Spaniards Fernando Echevarri-Anton Paz in Tornado.

It was a terrible day for the Sailing World Championship fleets. The infamous “northerly” decided to come to stay and the winds were blowing so hard as to prevent any races being held.

The organizers made a last-ditch effort to stage the Medal Races in the Star class, but strong winds stopped it being carried through. Thus, Roberto Scheidt-Bruno Prada earned the right to wear the gold star on his sail. Frenchmen Xavier Rohart-Pascal Rambeau were second and Britain’s Iain Percy-Andrew Simpson finished in third.

The Tornados had to remain on the beach and did not get to make it out onto the water. Spain’s Fernando Echevarri-Anton Paz have been crowned world champions, followed by Carolijn Brouwer-Sebastien Godefroid, of Belgium, and Mithc Booth—Pim Nieuwenhuis, of Holland.

As the race could not be held, the Portuguese ended up qualifying their country for Beijing 2008 in the Men’s RS:X class and in Laser. Gustavo Lima will feature in tomorrow’s Medal Race.

Chamionnat du Monde ISAF Cascais 2007 - Morning Report day 7

The ISAF Sailing World Championships will today see the 7th day of racing if weather conditions allow.

Currently the wind blows between 26 – 40 knots. Delay is up in all race areas. Priority will be given to Star and Tornado Classes to compete in the respective Medal Races. Starts can be given until 1959.

If these Medal Races should not occur the current classification will prevail as final.

Almost Perfect Day

The Cascais winds gave an almost perfect day's racing for the sailors in 9 of the 11 classes competing at the ISAF Sailing World Championships.

The first classes to hit the water were the RS:X Men & Women, 470 Women, Tornado and Laser Standard.

Poland's Przemyslaw Miarczynski was prominent to the fore in the Men's RS:X, notching up two more wins and extending his lead to 3 points over his immediate pursuers, Brazil's Ricardo Santos, who posted a 3rd and a 1st, and Poland's Piotrz Myszka who finished 2nd and 5th respectively.

João Rodrigues has climbed into 6th overall after finishing 3rd and 2nd in the day's two races. The Madeira sailor is joint 5th with Spaniard Ivan Pastor.

In the Women's RS:X, Poland's Zofia Klepacka is out in the lead 6 points ahead of Lise Vidal, of France, and 8 points clear of Italy's Alessandra Sensini and Flavia Tartgline, and France's Faustine Merret. The Frenchwomen are worthy of special note as they have 4 athletes in the top 10.

In the Tornado, the Spaniards Fernando Echevarri and Anton Paz head into the Medal Race in the lead, holding a 6-point advantage over Carolijn Brouwer and Sebastien Godfroid, of Belgium, which is, curiously, the only mixed double at the worlds. Mitch Booth and Herbert Dercksen, of Holland, are third overall.

In the Women's 470, the Dutch ladies Marcelien de Koning and Lobke Berkhout enjoyed an excellent day, posting 1st and 2nd, and are in the lead. The major switches in the overall standings did not stop there; Italy's Giulia Conti and Giovanna Micol reached second place and Swedes Therese Torgersson and Vendela Zacrisson moved up to third.

In the Laser, Australia's Tom Slingsby managed to hold on to top spot despite not having a particularly good day (16th and 9th). Croatian Mate Arapov is second and the surprise package came from Estonia's Deniss Karpak who dealt beautifully with the tricky conditions to move into the podium places, being the only competitor who finished inside the top ten in both races.

Gustavo Lima has leapt to 9th overall on the back of a 10th and a 14th in the two races of the day. The Portuguese sailor is now in one of the positions that grant access to the medal race and promises to pull out all the stops tomorrow.

In the Women's Laser Radial, championship leader Lijia Xu had a very poor day, and is now trailing the new leader by about 20 points. New championship leader, Petra Nieman, from Germany, won the first race of the day convincingly by one minute and finished in the second race. This gives her a two-point lead over two sailors, Tania Elias Calles Wolf and Nufar Eddelman.

The Star fleet already knows the 10 crews that will compete tomorrow at 1500 in the first Medal Race of Cascais 2007. The brazilians Robert Scheidt/Bruno Prada are in the lead, with only 4 points ahead of Frenchmen Xavier Rohart/Pascal Rambeau. The British Iain Percy/Andrew Simpson are third overall.

DAY 4

Finn

The Finns had a late start today in Cascais. They share a course area with the Ynglings and today it was the keelboat's turn to go first. This seemed like good news for the Finns as early in the day the winds were light, and with the first Finn start being scheduled for 16:20, it gave the stronger northerly winds more time to become established. After sailing on the more inshore course area 3 yesterday, today the Finns were out of course area 4, which is more exposed to the prevailing conditions with generally stronger winds and larger waves. However, what looked like promising conditions turned into one very up and down race, that left a few of the front runners picking up high scores.

In the yellow fleet the event leader after day one, Emilios Papathanasiou (GRE) choose the right hand side of the beat and paid dearly, rounding the top mark buried in the 30s. He could only recover to finish 12th. Meanwhile Daniel Birgmark (SWE) took the left hand side and found better pressure to lead round the top mark while the boats on the right were left floundering in hardly any wind. From there he went on to win the race by a substantial margin.

In contrast, the blue fleet had a much more even race. The wind went through the range, but was slightly steadier in direction than the yellow fleet had experienced. The boats who took the right side of the course emerged first at the top mark with Tapio Nirkko (FIN) leading Chris Brittle (GBR) and Jonas Høgh-Christensen (DEN).

49er

The wind caused enormous difficulties to the 49ers. The fleet that made its debut on Cascais 2007 Worlds is divided into four groups but only two of them managed to complete the day program. The red and green fleet is scheduled to begin the day earlier tomorrow with races beginning at 10am.

The overall will only be announced tomorrow after these two races.

“This was the first time that I have sailed under these conditions in Cascais. The wind was up and down from 5 to 20 knots in a short period, completely atypical. This way the classifications are unpredictable and almost impossible to maintain high performance.

Laser Radial

The women today were racing on course 5. Although there was little wind on shore on the race area they started on time in 12knots of breeze.

Championship leader Lijia Xu (CHN) led at the top mark but had to withdraw as she had broken a blag flag start.

A fourth in the second heat has maintained her position overall. However Tania Calles Elias Wolf (MEX) had a memorable day scoring to race wins to move her into second overall trailing Xu on a countback. Sophie De Truckenheim(FRA) moved to third overall nine points behind the two leaders.

Laser Standard

The Australian Tom Slingsby (AUS) was unstoppable. He won both races of the day and gained substantial advantage over the 2nd overall Thomas Le Breton (FRA), that is now 13 points away. Paul Goodison (GBR) is 3rd overall.

Gustavo Lima the Portuguese Laser representative was 12 on the first race and won the second, climbing to the 15 overall.

YNGLING

The British Armada still dictates the rules amongst the ladies. The British lead with two crews the overall with Sarah Ayton(GBR) leading over Shirley Robertson(GBR). Sally Barkow (USA) is third. This was a very hard day for all crews with strong winds on the most feared race course 5.

The Russians lead by Anna Basalkina won the first race of the day, and the Americans lead by Sally Barkow the second race.

RS:X MEN and WOMEN

The polish team had a knockout premiere in Cascais waters. Przemek Miarczynski (POL) and Zofia Klepacka (POL) won both races on each class and both lead the overall. The Italian veteran Alessandra Sensini (ITA) also had na excellent debut winning both races of her group. Third overall is this Spanish Marina Alabau (ESP).

In the RS:X Men, the second overall is Richard Stauffacher (SUI) foloowe by the Israeli Shahar Zubari (ISR).
